The House may vote on the action after the International Criminal Court pursues arrest warrants against Israeli leaders.
Speaker of the House Mike Johnson is developing legislation to sanction officials of the International Criminal Court (ICC) in response to the organizations’ request for arrest warrants against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant.
ICC prosecutors filed applications for the arrest warrants with the ICC on Monday, accusing both Israeli leaders and others of international war crimes, including the targeting of civilians, using starvation as a war tactic, and torture.
Speaker Johnson stated that the court’s “baseless and illegitimate decision should face global condemnation.” He said, “International bureaucrats cannot be allowed to use lawfare to usurp the authority of democratic nations that maintain the rule of law.”
The House speaker added, “Congress is reviewing all options, including sanctions, to punish the ICC and ensure its leadership faces consequences if they proceed.”
The U.S. is not a party of the court and has had a contentious relationship with the ICC for decades.
